No one wants to find themselves in an automobile accident. Unfortunately, statistically it is very likely that all of us will be involved in a car accident at some point in our lives. Be prepared when that time comes by printing out our handy Accident Checklist. Download this document and keep a copy of it in your car. It provides a convenient place to record key information if you are in any sort of traffic accident.

Get Medical Help

If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. Medical care immediately following an injury is critical, so if you have any doubts regarding your condition, seek immediate treatment. If symptoms develop after you leave the scene of the accident, proceed to an emergency room as soon as possible.

Notify the Police

Record name, agency, and badge number of all responding officers. Do not leave the scene until an accident report has been completed.

Get Contact & Insurance Information

Record the name, address, and phone number of all other drivers, passengers, and witnesses. Also note the make, model, color, and plate # of all other vehicles. And record driver insurance info.

Take Photographs

As soon as it is safe, take pictures of the vehicles (damages and positions) before they are moved. As soon as you are home, photograph any injuries including cuts, bruising, bandages, casts, etc. It is also important to photograph any seat belt bruising you may have on your shoulders and chest if/when they develop to prove you were wearing a seat belt.

Do Not Discuss Fault

Even if you may have been partially at fault in the accident, never say anything to reveal that feeling. Do not accuse or blame the other party or parties, even if you believe they were clearly at fault. If the other driver does admit fault, make a mental note of it. As soon as you are able, write down exactly what you remember them saying.

Call Your Insurance Agent

Call your car insurance agent and notify him/her of the accident ASAP. Failure to quickly report your accident can lead to a denial of your claim. Write down your claim number, the name of anyone you speak to and a direct phone number to reach them. NEVER discuss fault or details of your accident with your insurance agent without first speaking to an attorney.
